Members of the Negombo Local Inter Religious Committee (LIRC) supplied 98 packs of dry rations to needy families in the area with funds provided by NPC and distributed them in collaboration with Social Development Services Foundation and the Divisional Secretariat of Negombo. The initiative is supported by Misereor.

Recipients included female-headed households, daily income wage earners and families with differently-abled people.

Fathima Josinka, Coordinator of Negombo LIRC, with the help of Grama Niladhari officers and civil society leaders, made a list of the beneficiaries. The distribution was conducted with the participation of LIRC members.
Three hundred protective masks were also given to the beneficiaries.

Sujail Muneer, a LIRC member who has lost his daily income, thanked organizers for helping families who were facing a difficult time due to the curfew imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Ms. Josinka said that one family of four, including two children, were homeless and were allowed by police to use a building in the town for cooking purposes, so they were given a packet of dry rations.

She said most of the needy were daily wage earners who had lost their means of income. “All beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to us for helping them in their difficult times.”

She added that the police had issued curfew passes to do the distribution without any difficulty because Negombo LIRC was recognized for their work in the area.
