NPC, through the Vavuniya Local Inter Religious Committee (LIRC) and the Rural Development Foundation of Vavuniya, identified 105 disadvantaged families from nine rural villages in need of ration packs. The relief effort was supported by Misereor.

Many low income daily wage earners have been unable to feed their families due to the curfew imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Members of Vavuniya LIRC identified the families who needed the dry rations packets with the support of government officials and the police. The Vavuniya police station assisted LIRC members by issuing curfew passes and accompanying them to the villages.

Religious leaders, police officers and LIRC members participated in the distribution of the packs.

“We thank NPC for helping people in need during Covid-19 pandemic. Because of the curfew many daily income earners are facing challenges in feeding their families. We can carry out this humanitarian task because of the financial support NPC has provided to us,” a pastor pointed out.

“I feel proud of our LIRC and its members. I want to thank all LIRC members and the government authorities who supported this relief work,” a Hindu priest said.
