A Life Dedicated to Peace
Born in Germany in 1946, Norbert’s journey as a peace researcher, educator, and practitioner was rooted in a deep belief in the transformative power of nonviolence. He was a founding figure in the field of conflict transformation in Europe, and his early work with the Berghof Foundation for Conflict Studies laid the groundwork for innovative approaches to addressing deep-rooted conflict.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to peace and dialogue, Dr. Ropers was awarded the Olof Palme Peace Prize in 2025, one of the world’s most prestigious honors in the field of human rights and conflict resolution. The award citation praised him as "a steadfast advocate for inclusive peacebuilding, who brought together adversaries with patience, courage, and trust." Norbert brought his wealth of experience to Sri Lanka in the early 2000s, during one of the country’s most turbulent periods. As the Director of the Berghof Foundation’s Sri Lanka Office, he worked with unyielding commitment to foster inclusive dialogue, empower civil society, and accompany peace efforts with quiet strength and wisdom. His ability to listen deeply and engage respectfully with all actors – whether state officials, armed groups, religious leaders, or youth activists – earned him broad respect.

A Mentor and Friend to Many
Those who worked with Norbert remember him not only for his intellectual rigor but for his kindness, humility, and unwavering optimism. He inspired a generation of peacebuilders in Sri Lanka and beyond. As a mentor, he nurtured the talents of emerging scholars and activists, offering not only knowledge but genuine companionship and moral support.

His unwavering belief in the possibility of reconciliation, even in the face of setbacks, gave courage to many who felt disheartened.

As we bid farewell to Dr. Norbert Ropers, we do so with immense gratitude. We celebrate a life lived with purpose and heart. We honor his journey by recommitting ourselves to the path of nonviolence, empathy, and transformation.
