Pluralism  is . . .

South Asia is a perfect example of the incredible diversity that exists in the world . . . In South Asia we are increasingly aware of the impact of that diversity on our societies. But in our promotion of pluralism we must not speak of the diversity alone, but rather the energetic engagement with diversity. This in essence is pluralism. Pluralism does not require us to leave our identities behind but rather embraces them and allows us to focus on how we can work together with our differences. And so pluralism is first based on dialogue.

It is crucial that we comprehend that our security, prosperity and well-being, and that of our families, communities and societies, is inextricably linked to the rest of the world. It is a realization that transcends the bounds of creed, ethnicity, language, gender and nationality, and prioritizes human dignity above all else. We, all of us, have an opportunity in the coming days to put forth a vision for the future that is built on cooperation rather that clash or confrontation.

Jehan PereraPluralism is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as "a state of society in which members of diverse ethnic, racial, religious, or social groups maintain an autonomous participation in and development of their traditional culture or special interest within the confines of a common civilization". By adopting pluralistic ideals and polices, groups can maintain their separate identities without threatening inter-group harmony.
